Will free canals from illegal grabbing before next monsoon: DSCC mayor

Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), has announced to clear the canals under the DSCC before the next monsoon.

While addressing reporters after inspecting the ongoing waste removal activities of Shyampur Canal in Baraitali area of ​​Shyampur on Tuesday, the mayor said, "We are taking short- and long-term measures to free the people of Dhaka from waterlogging. We are starting short-term activities with our self-funding."

"The first step is to vacate the occupied places. We will demarcate the canals, vacate them and remove the waste according to the Cadastral Survey (CS Khatiyan). Through this, we will restore the water flow. If water flow is restored, we are hopeful there will be no more waterlogging," he added.

He hoped to free the people of Dhaka from waterlogging to a great extent within the next two years through these activities.

In response to another question about box culverts, the DSCC mayor said the box culverts, especially the ones at Panthapath and Dholaikhal, had not been cleaned properly for a long time.

"We will soon begin the work of cleaning them up and then decide on what can be done under our long-term plan."

Regarding the transfer of WASA manpower to DSCC for canal and drainage management, Taposh further said, "We will take as much manpower and equipment as we need. In this regard, we have formed a committee that will review all the issues and formulate a definite outline within a month. In light of that, we will take the next step."

On Tuesday morning, he visited the Trimohoni area of ​​Jirani Canal too and ordered to determine the parts of the houses built by occupying the canal, according to the CS Khatiyan, and demolish those.
