India hasn't responded to Bangladesh's request for extradition of Hasina, minister tells Rajya Sabha
Bangladesh had sought the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for offences allegedly committed before she came to India on 5 August 2024
India's upper house of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, was told today (6 February) that the country had not responded to Bangladesh's request for extradition.
State Minister of External Affairs Kiriti Vardhan Singh, in response to lawmaker Dr John Brittas, said Bangladesh had sought the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for offences allegedly committed before she came to India on 5 August 2024.
Brittas had asked whether Bangladesh had sought extradition, what the reason for it was and what the Indian government's response had been.
Earlier in December 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally wrote to the government of India to facilitate the return of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain, "We have clearly informed India of our position. We have conveyed that we want her [Hasina] back for judicial process."
Yesterday, Home Adviser Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd) said the interim government is making all efforts to bring back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and others from India under the extradition treaty.
"We are trying to bring back those who are under trial on charges of crimes against humanity at the ICT," he said.
The home adviser spoke regarding what measures the government has taken to arrest over 100 accused against whom the ICT has issued arrest warrant for their involvement in crimes against humanity during July-August uprising.
