Massive protests after man shoots Jamia student

A teenager today pulled out a gun in broad daylight and fired at students protesting against the citizenship law near Jamia Millia University in Delhi, injuring one student.

Only after he fired the shot did the police, present in large numbers to keep a check on the protest, react, reports NDTV. 

The protests spiralled as hundreds more joined in, breaking police barricades as they tried to march towards Rajghat.

Home Minister Amit Shah said he had ordered stringent action in the shooting incident and "the culprit will not be spared".

In a chilling video, the teenager is seen walking backwards as he points his gun at protesters. Dozens of policemen in riot gear are seen behind him, but none of them is seen trying to stop the shooter.

"Yeh lo azaadi (here's your freedom)" he sneers at the protesters. After he fires the shot, one police officer is seen walking towards him and grabbing him. Saying that he was a juvenile, police officials said that the attacker cannot be named.

While being taken away, he shouted "Delhi Police zindabad (Long live Delhi Police)".

Hours before the incident, the assailant shared multiple posts on his Facebook profile in which he boasted he was the "only true Hindu" at the protest site and asked his followers to drape him "in a saffron cloth at his last rites" and chant "Jai Shree Ram."

He said he was doing "this is for Chandan Gupta," who was shot dead during communal violence in Kasganj district in Uttar Pradesh last year. His profile has since been taken down.

Moments before the shooting, he also shot three Facebook Live videos which showed him heading to the area where students can be seen leading a peaceful protest, reports Indian Express.

Amit Shah says culprit will not be spared

Home minister Amit Shah spoke to the Delhi police Commissioner after an armed man, who is reported to be a minor, fired at protesters demonstrating against the amended citizenship law near Jamia Millia Islamia University in the city. Shah said that the culprit will not be spared.

The gun-wielding man opened fire leaving one student injured in the incident.

"I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner on the firing incident(in Jamia area) and instructed them to take strict action. The central government will not tolerate any such incident, it will be taken seriously and the culprit will not be spared," Shah tweeted in Hindi.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the home minister to take care of the "deteriorating" law and order situation in Delhi.

"What is happening in Delhi? The law and order is deteriorating. Please take care of Delhi's law and order," Kejriwal said in the tweet.
