Pori Moni appears at NBR tribunal over income tax dispute
"During the assessment of 2018-1019 tax year, the actor’s tax amounted to more than what she filed in her tax return."
Dhallywood actress Shamsunnahar Smrity, popularly known as Pori Moni, appeared on Sunday at an appeal hearing over an income tax claim at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) headquarters in the capital.
According to sources at the NBR, she stayed for around 10 minutes at the chamber of Md Nazmul Karim, president of the Taxes Appellate Tribunal, the highest judicial authority in determining factual point of income tax cases.
Pori Moni declined to make any comments regarding this matter when journalists approached her.
While emerging from the tribunal president's chamber, in response to a question from The Business Standard reporter, she said, "Why, can't I come?"
Asked whether the NBR had called her for tax-related matters, the actress responded with a smile, "Please don't write anything unrelated."
This correspondent called Md Nazmul Karim for his comment on this matter but he did not pick up his mobile phone.
A senior official of the tribunal, who spoke to TBS on the condition of anonymity, said, "She was unable to provide evidence for certain expenditures. She filed an appeal after taxes were imposed."
Jalish Mahmud, deputy commissioner of Tax Zone 12, where the actress files her income tax returns, told TBS that she had paid less tax while filing her returns for the 2018-19 tax year.
"Two months ago, when legal proceedings were initiated to recover the due tax, she appealed to the appellate tribunal," he added.
He did not provide any detail regarding the amount of the income tax dispute.
