Palak, Shah Kamal remanded, 4 others shown arrested in separate cases

A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand to former state minister for post, telecommunication and information technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak and a two-day remand to former senior secretary Md Shah Kamal in two separate murder cases.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court issued the order today (9 December) after hearing separate remand pleas from the police, reports Prothom Alo.

Apart from this, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) President Hasanul Haque Inu, former food minister Qamrul Islam, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and former additional deputy inspector general (Addl DIG) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mashiur Rahman have been shown arrested in separate cases.

Court sources said that all the accused were brought from the jail to the CMM Court at around 7am and were taken to the courtroom around 9am. They were ordered to be sent to jail after the hearings by 10:30am.

Presenting Palak in court, police sought seven days to grill him in the Manik Mia murder case filed at Shahbagh Police Station. On the other hand, Palak's lawyers pleaded to scrap the remand plea and applied for bail.

After hearing both sides, the court granted police three days for interrogating Palak.

According to the case documents, Manik was shot dead during the protests of the anti-discrimination student-public movement in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on 5 August.

Palak was arrested on 14 August and has been in police remand for 37 days in six cases so far.

Meanwhile, the court granted police two days to interrogate Shah Kamal, former senior secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, in the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Shamim Mollah filed at Paltan Police Station.

Earlier, the police presented him in court and pleaded for a seven-day remand while his lawyers sought his bail. The court, after hearing both sides, sent Kamal into a two-day remand.

A case was filed against 704 people, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, on the charge of killing Shamim on the day of BNP's rally in the capital's Nayapaltan on 28 October last year. The police applied for remand by showing Kamal as arrested in this case.

Kamal was arrested from Mohakhali on 17 August. The next day, the court granted police five days to grill him in a case under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.

Ex-ministers Qamrul, Menon, 3 others shown arrested fresh cases

 A court today showed former ministers Advocate Qamrul Islam and Rashed Khan Menon and three others arrested in fresh cases filed with different police stations in the capital.

The three other arrestees are- former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former deputy commissioner of police's Lalbagh zone Moshiur Rahman and former acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Asadur Rahman Kiron.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the orders, allowing separate pleas of the police.

Of the five, Qamrul was shown arrested in separate murder cases filed with the Kamrangirchar Police Station, while Menon was shown arrested in a case filed with the Motijheel Police Station. 

Mamun and Moshiur were shown arrested in a case filed with the Chawkbazar Police Station and Kiron was shown arrested in a case filed with the Uttara West Police Station.

Advocate Qamrul Islam was arrested from Uttara Sector-12 on 18 November, while Rashed Khan Menon was arrested on August 22 from the capital's Gulshan area. 

Detective Branch of police on 3 September arrested the former police chief and arrested Moshiur on 19 September from the capital.
