Clashes over Chinmoy's bail denial: 8 accused put on 5-day remand again
The court passed the order when police produced the accused before the 3rd Court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Hossain amid tight security and sought their remand
A Chattogram court today (10 December) granted a five-day remand for eight individuals accused of attacking police and vandalising property following the bail denial of ex-Iskcon leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Jote.
The court passed the order when police produced the accused before the 3rd Court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Hossain amid tight security and sought their remand, Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan told The Business Standard.
"The prosecution applied for a 7-day remand and the court granted a five-day remand after a hearing," he added.
The suspects, identified as Partha Chakraborty, Apurba Sheel, Ujjal Das alias Johnny Das, Apu Chandra Saha, Niloy Das, Dhrubo Das, Md Delwar Hossain, and Md Nuru.
On 2 December, the suspects were placed on a seven-day remand following their arrest.
The chaos erupted on 26 November when Chinmoy Krishna Das was denied bail and sent to prison following his arrest in a sedition case filed by a former BNP leader.
Chinmoy was being transported in a prison van, and his supporters blocked the vehicle, staging a protest for nearly three hours.
The standoff escalated as police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers used baton charges and sound grenades to disperse the crowd. The situation further intensified with clashes between Chinmoy's supporters and law enforcement personnel.
Amid the turmoil, violence spilled into Rangam Convention Hall Lane, opposite the court building. Advocate Saiful Islam Alif was fatally attacked by a mob that beat and hacked him to death.
Alif's father filed a murder case naming 31 individuals, while Alif's brother, Khane Alam, filed another case under the Explosives Act, accusing 116 individuals of vehicle vandalism and attacks on the public.
So far, six cases including a murder case, police assault, vandalism, and obstruction of government duties, have been filed in connection with the incident.
Three of these cases were filed by police.
Investigations into the incidents are ongoing, with the authorities emphasising the need for accountability and order in response to the violent outburst.
