15 villages affected due to Teesta erosion in Rangpur
The flood-affected people complained that many people have come to power for the last forty years but no one has worked on the erosion of the river Teesta.
Fifteen villages of Kaunia, Gangachara and Pirgacha upazilas of Rangpur have been affected by flooding due to the erosion of river Teesta.
An official of Rangpur Water Development Board said an area of around 4-5 km has been lost into the river, so far.
Md Mehedi Hasan, executive engineer of Rangpur Water Development Board, said many houses and croplands of 15 villages of Kaunia, Gangachara and Pirgachha went into the gorge of Teesta.
"People of these areas are living inhuman lives losing everything due to the river erosion," he said.
The flood-affected people complained that many people have come to power for the last forty years but no one has worked on the erosion of the river Teesta. They are saying that if a dam is not built, the rest of their land will be lost to the river.
A flood-affected victim, Nezamul Islam said, "I had to deal with river erosion 15 times. I went to different government departments many times but I did not get any remedy. Many of the victims of river erosion are now living inhumane lives on the streets."
