Navy rescues 19 people from human traffickers, arrests one in Teknaf
Bangladesh Navy personnel have arrested a member of a human trafficking gang and rescued 19 people, including two Bangladeshi nationals and 17 Rohingyas.
They were being gathered to be trafficked to Malaysia from the Teknaf coast in Cox's Bazar.
A navy team conducted the operation in the Madhyam Kachchapia area of Baharchhara Union in Teknaf Upazila around midnight yesterday (20 January), said Teknaf police station OC Muhammad Gias Uddin.
However, the name and identity of the arrested human trafficking gang member could not be known, but the man said that he was a Rohingya.
OC Gias said navy members received information that some Rohingyas were gathering in some houses in the Madhyam Kachchapia hill area to leave for Malaysia.
Later, when the navy team reached the spot, some people tried to run away, but they managed to arrest one of the human traffickers and rescue the 19 victims.
Among those rescued, including children, were eight women and 11 men, said OC Gias.
A case is being filed at Teknaf police station under the relevant law against the arrestee, he added.
