Chittagong Urea Fertilizer factory resumes production after three-week shutdown
After a three-week shutdown, the state-owned Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) has restarted urea production.
Uttam Chowdhury, additional chief chemist and head of the Production Department at CUFL told TBS, that the production resumed at the factory at around 2:30am yesterday (25 January).
Earlier, the operations were halted on 3 January due to a mechanical fault.
CUFL experienced significant downtime last year as well, remaining out of operation for 10 months from 7 February due to mechanical faults and gas supply interruptions. The factory eventually resumed production on 13 October, said CUFL sources.
For full operation, CUFL's urea and ammonia plants require a daily supply of 47 million cubic feet of gas, which is provided by Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL).
Established in 1987 in Rangadia, Anwara Upazila, on the south bank of the Karnaphuli River, CUFL originally had a daily production capacity of 1,700 metric tons of urea. However, it currently produces 1,200 metric tons of urea per day, alongside 800 metric tons of ammonia.
