Rajshahi youth jailed for killing 50 migratory birds with poison
A mobile court has sentenced a youth to three days in jail for killing over 50 migratory birds by using poison baits in the Padma River's char area in Rajshahi.
Assistant Commissioner of the District Administration and Executive Magistrate Ashiq Zaman passed the sentence today (28 January), said Naval Police Rajshahi Region Inspector Ujjwal Hossain.
The youth, Liton Hossian, was arrested by Naval police and forest department officials from the city's Srirampur area this morning.
Forest Department's Wildlife Inspector Jahangir Kabir said Liton put poison bait in the Padma River char area last night. The birds died after eating this poison bait.
"In the morning, Liton reportedly slit the throats of the dead birds and supplied them to various hotels and restaurants in the city. To avoid suspicion, Liton used to go to the char with a current net under the pretext of fishing. His real job was to kill birds with poison bait. We have been following him for the past few days and arrested him," he added.
He also said four dead Eurasian teals and about 300 meters of current net were seized from Liton during the arrest. Later in the afternoon, another 40 dead Eurasian teals were recovered.
