'Fingernails pulled out': Body of easy bike driver found in Cox's Bazar canal, one detained
However, the victim's family claimed that he was brutally beaten to death over allegations of easy bike theft
Cox's Bazar police today (29 January) recovered the body of a man with grave injury marks from a canal in the upazila's Khurushkul Union.
The deceased has been identified as Abul Kalam, 35, a battery-run easy bike driver, son of late Amanul Haque from Fakir Para in Ward-4 of the union.
"Around 10am, the body was discovered in a canal near Allahwala Hatchery area in the union," Cox's Bazar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ilyas Khan told The Business Standard.
The OC stated that the victim's body bore marks of severe injuries. "Several fingernails on his hands and feet were pulled out."
He said the body has been sent to the Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
"The exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report," the OC added.
However, Mohammad Karim, the victim's cousin, claimed that Kalam was brutally beaten to death over allegations of easy bike theft.
"A few days ago, an easy bike was stolen from a garage in the upazila's Tekpara area. The vehicle belonged to Jafor Ullah which Kalam used to operate. Kalam was accused of being involved in the theft," he said.
Karim further claimed that a few days ago, a group of people, including Jafor, had visited Kalam's house and threatened him.
Meanwhile, police have detained Jafor in connection with the murder.
OC Ilyas said Jafor is currently being interrogated and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend others involved.
Stating that preliminary findings suggest the murder appears to be linked to the vehicle theft allegation, the OC said, "Police are working to uncover the mystery behind the killing."
