Wild elephant dies after falling from hill in Chattogram
A wild elephant succumbed to its injuries after falling from a high hill in the Jungle Chambol area under Banshkhali Upazila in Chattogram.
The incident occurred around 3pm on Saturday (1 February), said Anisuzzaman Sheikh, range officer of Jaldi Wildlife Sanctuary.
Forest officials reached the scene around 4pm that day and found the elephant in critical condition.
Veterinary surgeon Dr Hatem Sajjad Md Julkarnain arrived yesterday and treated the elephant, but the elephant succumbed to its injuries around 11am today.
Dr Julkarnain confirmed that the elephant's backbone was broken in the fall, which was from a height of at least 100 feet.
There were several injuries in other parts of her body, he said.
The elephant will be buried in the forest after an autopsy, said the forest official.
