Gazipur Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami's Nayeb-e-Ameer and the party's nominated candidate for the upcoming parliamentary election in Gazipur, Md Hossain Ali, has demanded a ban on the political activities of Awami League in Bangladesh.
He argued that the former ruling party should be prohibited in the same manner as the ban on Chhatra League, citing allegations of terrorism. He also issued a 24-hour ultimatum for this action.
Hossain Ali made the remarks today (13 February) at around 11:30am while attending the namaz-e-janaza of anti-discrimination movement activist Abul Kashem at Rajbari field in Gazipur.
"Awami League's miscreants are still roaming freely in the area, and the police are not arresting them. We do not want to see any more bloodshed or dead bodies like that of Kashem. I demand the immediate arrest and execution of those who attacked the anti-discrimination movement activists at Mozammel's house," he said.
Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Shibir President Rezaul Karim, who was also present at the funeral, echoed the demand for banning Awami League.
According to the police, on Friday night (7 February), miscreants attacked the house of former Liberation War Affairs minister and Gazipur district Awami League president AKM Mozammel Haque in the Dhirashram, Dakshinkhan area of Gazipur.
Upon receiving the news, members of the Gazipur Anti-Discrimination Student Movement went to the house to resist the attackers. However, they were assaulted, leaving 17 people seriously injured. They were initially admitted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, with some later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where one person was put on life support. Abul Kashem died yesterday (12 February) at around 3pm while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On 9 February, Abdullah Al Mohit, convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's Gazipur District Branch, filed a case regarding the attack, naming 239 individuals and accusing 200 to 300 unidentified persons. The primary accused is Amzad Molla, a local Awami League activist and the nephew of the minister.
According to the latest updates, 132 people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Gazipur Metropolitan Sadar Metro police station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan said that the murder case would be added to the previous case related to the attack. He also mentioned that efforts are ongoing to arrest others involved in the incident.
