Man beaten, burned to death for hurting religious sentiments
Video clips and photos of the incident and charred body of the victim went viral on social media soon after the incident happened yesterday
A man was beaten and burned to death by angry locals in Lalmonirhat's Burimari on allegations of hurting religious sentiment on Thursday evening.
The deceased is Shahidunnabi Jewel, a former employee of Rangpur Cantonment Public School.
According to locals, two men entered a mosque after the evening prayer. Identifying themselves as members of law enforcing agency, they claimed that arms were hidden in the mosque and searched the self where Quaran and hadith books were kept.
While searching, the duo reportedly threw the holy Quran. Soon after, locals took the men away from there and an angry mob started beating them. One of the two men was able to escape.
Later, hundreds of people beat Jewel and burnt him to death in the street.
Police were sent to bring the situation under control. They fired around 17 rounds of shotgun shells. Ten policemen were injured as angry locals pelted stones.
Lalmonrihat District administrator Abu Zafar said, "Police have been deployed at the spot to control the situation."
