Erfan Salim on fresh remand in Navy officer assaulting case
Erfan, Zahidul and Dipu allegedly tried to misguide investigators with different narratives about the incident
A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand to Erfan Salim, son of Awami League's Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Salim, and his bodyguard Zahidul Islam each in a case filed over assaulting a Navy officer.
The court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman passed the order on Sunday after hearing a petition filed by the police seeking a five-day remand for them in the case.
The police produced Erfan, the recently suspended councillor of Dhaka South City Corporation's ward-30, and his bodyguard Zahidul before the court at the end of their three-day remand granted earlier.
On 26 October, Navy Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan filed the case against Erfan and his associates for assaulting him in the previous night at Kalabagan crossing as the officer's motorbike had collided with Erfan's car.
Dipu, the protocol officer of Haji Salim, was placed on another two-day remand on Saturday in a case filed over the attack, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) officers who are investigating the case.
HN Azimul Haque, deputy commissioner of DB's Ramna zone, said, "We appealed for a five-day remand [for Dipu] for further questioning, but the court granted two days."
DB investigators said Erfan, Zahidul and Dipu were trying to misguide investigators giving different narratives about the incident. So, police applied for their further remands.
As none of the closed-circuit television cameras in the area covered the incident, the investigators had to rely on the footage went viral on social media, said the investigators, adding that they were collecting other pieces of evidence as well.
