Drug trade masked in gold business busted; ringleader held
Ice is an expensive drug, and costs around Tk10,000 for consuming it a single time
Using the forefront of gold business, Chandon Roy, a resident of the capital's Gandaria area, tried to expand his business of an expensive drug named "Ice", a very addictive illegal drug, in Dhaka. Ice costs around Tk10,000 for consuming it a single time.
The detective branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) raided Bashundhara, Gulshan, Banani areas and arrested six members of this gang, including Chandon Roy, the ringleader.
DB Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akter revealed the matter at a press conference at the DMP media centre on Thursday.
The other arrestees are Siraj, Ovi, Jewel, Rubayat and Cany. Police also recovered 600 grams of Ice from their possession.
At the press conference, the DB official said Chandon used some showbiz models to target the youth and teenagers from rich families.
Hafiz Akter continued, "He imported Ice from Malaysia. The cost of 10 grams of Ice is around Tk10 lakh. It has different names, including Sebu, crystal meth and D meth, in other countries."
"Originated in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and China, the drug creates excitement of hormone. And the drug is consumable in three ways - smoking, injecting in body and as tablets," said the DB official.
Chandhon Roy was the main dealer in Bangladesh, and brought the drug by air through his relative Songkar Biswas, he added.
According to Hafiz Akter, Ice was more powerful than Yaba tablets. It was mainly nerve stimulant drug and its consumption increased hormonal arousal a thousand times more than usual.
Consequently, there arise risks of brain stroke, heart attack, teeth fading and permanent hallucination, said Hafiz, the additional commissioner at the DB.
