Ban party-affiliated student politics at Buet: Nur
After the death of Abrar, Buet students have been demanding a complete ban on organisation-based politics on the campus
Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur has said he is not in favour of the demand for banning student politics at Buet, but he wants a ban on traditional party-affiliated student politics on the campus.
He made the comment while talking to The Business Standard on the sidelines of a protest programme on Dhaka University campus on Wednesday.
Nur went there to express solidarity with protesters in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at TSC intersection.
The protesters were demanding justice for Abrar Fahad. Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League activists on October 7.
After the death of Abrar, Buet students have been demanding a complete ban on organisation-based politics on the campus.
In this regard, they gave a seven-day ultimatum to the university authorities to meet their 10-point demands.
Criticising the ruling party activities, Ducsu VP Nur said torture of students by the student wing of the ruling party is nothing new.
There are instances, the government has used the ruling party's student wing and police to suppress the opponents, he said while speaking at the protest programme.
Earlier, Chhatra League carried out several attacks on students across the country, he added.
On Wednesday, the unruly activists have also carried out attack on the procession brought out in Jagannath University protesting Abrar's death, he said.
They also issued threat to the protesters at Chattogram University.
The Ducsu VP said if the agitation is stopped, the trial will also be stopped.
There is no headway in solving the mystery behind the murder of Cumilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu and madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi, he said.
He underscored the need for holding elections to student unions in all educational institutions to create a democratic environment there.
Ducsu VP also demanded that Abrar's killers be tried under speedy trial tribunal.
The government could not implement the Teesta Water Sharing Treaty, but it allowed India to take water from the Feni River, said Nur.
