Another 5 sentenced to life imprisonment
A Khulna court has sentenced four people to death in a case filed over the murder of a local medicine shop owner named Feroz Sheikh in Katenga village of Terkhada upazila under the district.
Five others have been sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement with the killing.
Khulna Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Yarab Hossain gave the verdict at 11:30 am on Thursday.
The death row convicts are Farid Mollah, Mezbah Mollah, Mortoza and Tutul, while Mostofa Mollah, Selim Sikder, Nasir Sikder, Mehedi Mollah and Shahidul Sikder have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
In addition, each of the convicts who got life term have been given another six months of rigorous imprisonment if they fail to pay a fine of Tk50,000.
Among the convicts, Mortoza and Mehedi were absconding at the time of the verdict.
Four other accused in the case have been acquitted as the charges against them were not proved.
According to court sources, on the night of 15 August 2010 miscreants hacked medicine seller Firoz Sheikh over a previous feud, leaving him seriously injured.
He was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a critical condition and died later that night while undergoing treatment.
A murder case was filed with Terkhada police station by Hiru Sheikh, younger brother of the deceased accusing 30 people.
On 6 December 2013, a charge-sheet was filed in the court against 15 people. The case was handled by Assistant Public Prosecutor Advocate M Ilias Khan on behalf of the state.
