Mamunul cheated me: Jannat
She filed a rape case against Mamunul with Narayanganj's Sonargaon police station on Friday
Claiming that Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque had been cheating her for a long time, his so-called second wife Jannat Ara Jharna demanded fair trial from the state.
Jannat made the remarks to reporters after filing a rape case against Mamunul with Narayanganj's Sonargaon police station on Friday.
Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Amir Khasru confirmed the matter while talking to The Business Standard.
Sonargaon Police Station's Inspector (Investigation) Shafiqul Islam will investigate the case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
After the case was filed, Sonargaon police took Jannat to Narayanganj District Civil Surgeon's Office for medical examination.
Although Mamunul claimed Jannat to be his second wife, the latter did not mention herself as his wife in the case statement.
Jannat said, "Taking the opportunity of my helplessness, Mamunul Haque promised to marry me at different times, but whenever I raised the issue, he used to beat about the bush to waste time; though he repeatedly promised me to do so. He used to take me to different hotels and resorts in the name of travelling since 2018."
Jannat filed the case against Hefazat-e-Islam central Joint Secretary Mamunul Haque alleging rape with the promise of marriage.
Regarding her acquaintance with Mamunul, Jannat said she was introduced to Mamunul in 2005 through her husband Maulana Shahidul Islam. Being a friend of her husband, Mamunul had free access to their house.
"Before I met Mamunul, we had a happy conjugal life. Mamunul interfered into our marital problems and started creating distance between Shahidul and me, turning our conjugal life into an extremely unhappy one. At one stage, we got divorced on the advice of Mamnul," Jannat said.
Informing that Mamunul took her to Sonargaon resort on 3 April for a trip, she said, "After he took me to the resort, some people detained us while we were there. Later, Mamunul's followers attacked the resort and snatched us away. But Mamunul took me to a house of an acquaintance in Mohammadpur and forcefully kept me in the house without allowing me to return to my home. He did not allow me to communicate with anyone."
Jharna said, "Later, I tactfully informed my eldest son about my whereabouts and asked him to take legal step to rescue me from captivity."
"When the DB police rescued me later, I came to know that my father had filed a general diary with the Kalabagan police station in the capital to rescue me. The police rescued me and handed me over to my father. There, I consulted with my family and relatives. That is why, I delayed to file this case."
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (detective branch) rescued Mamunul Haque's 'second wife' Jannat Ara Jharna from a home in the city's Mohammadpur area on Tuesday.
On 11 April, Jharna's oldest son Abdur Rahman filed a general dairy with Paltan Police Station, requesting the law enforcers to rescue his mother, missing since 3 April.
On 27 April, Jharna's father filed another general dairy with Kalabagan Police Station in this connection.
On 3 April, local ruling party supporters surrounded the Royal Resort in Sonargaon, after hearing that the Hefazat leader was staying with a woman at the resort. On that day, Mamunul claimed that the woman he was with was his second wife whom he had married two years ago.
