Protest against vandalism at educational institutes in Chattogram

Nurul Islam Shikkha Shomonnoy officials have protested against the vandalism by vested quarters at a college and a kindergarten school in Chattogram and a false case against the Shikkha Shomonnoy president, Mujibur Rahman, a member of the Awami League's sub-committee on industries and commerce.

The college and the kindergarten are listed under Nurul Islam Shikkha Shomonnoy.

Hajera-Taju School and College was founded by former minister, educationist and industrialist Nurul Islam and Chittagong Kindergarten School was founded by his son Mujibur Rahman.

At a press conference held at S Rahman Hall of Chattogram Press Club on Saturday, Nurul Islam Shikkha Shomonnoy General Secretary Dabir Uddin Khan said a group of 15-20 people led by a man named Shahedul Islam had attacked the two institutes with local weapons and vandalised those on 19 April, severely damaging office rooms and school labs, reads a press release.

"We went to file a case against the vandalism with Chandgaon Police Station but the officer-in-charge recorded the case the next day, 20 April," he said.

On the other hand, a false and fabricated case of extortion was filed against several authorities of Nurul Islam Shikkha Shomonnoy, naming Mujibur as the prime accused, with the connivance of the assailants and the officer-in-charge, he said in the written statement.

Dabir further said Shahedul's family had claimed the school land but a case on this was pending in court.

"How can they say Mujibur occupied the land unjustly while there is an ongoing case? Until the court gives the verdict, it is a criminal offence to call someone a usurper," he added.

Even the allegation of land grabbing brought against Mujibur on 29 April by Shahedul's family at a press conference was false and fabricated and the purpose was to politically humiliate Nurul Islam's family.

Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman said both parties had filed counter cases on 20 April.

None has been arrested so far but the police are investigating the cases with utmost importance, he said.

Dabir also said Nurul had founded 33 educational institutions that have 1,200 teachers and 12,000 students. All these educational institutes are self-funded.

Among others, Hajera-Taju Degree College Teacher SM Ayub, Hajera-Taju School and College Headmaster ASM Islam, Sanwara Group Officer Maklusur Rahman, Hajera-Taju Degree College teacher A AK Islam, teacher Qutub Uddin, Sanwara Islam Boys High School Headmaster Abul Mansur and teacher Fatema Yasmin were at the press conference.
