Police have arrested former Chattogram MP and top Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shahjahan Chowdhury, in a case filed in connection with clashes between law enforcers and madrassa students at Hathazari in Chattogram
He was arrested in a police raid during the early hours of Saturday from his home at Chhamdar area of Satkania municipality in Chattogram.
Chattogram District Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Masum confirmed the matter to The Business Standard and said, "We have found evidence of Shahajan Chowdhury's involvement in the violence that Hifazat-e-Islam carried out on 26-28 March in Chittagong's Hathazari. He will be shown arrested as a provocateur in the case.

Earlier on 26 March, four people, including three madrassa students, were killed in clashes between police and Hefazat activists in protest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh. Later, madrasa students attacked Hathazari Police Station, set fire to the Sadar land office and the dak bungalow.
On 31 March, five days after the incident, Ekramul Haque Sikder, an official at the Upazila Assistant Commissioner's (Land) Office, and Akhter Kamal Chowdhury, assistant land officer at the Sadar Union Land Office, filed two separate cases.
The police have also filed four separate cases over the attack on Hathazari Police Station, obstructing police from carrying out duties, beating policemen, and setting a fire.
Around 2,500 unidentified persons have been accused in the six cases.
