20 injured as Ro Ro ferry hits Padma Bridge pillar
The incident took place around 9:45am when the ferry was coming to Shimulia ghat from Banglabazarghat in Madaripur
At least 20 passengers were injured as a Ro Ro ferry Shahjalal hit 17 no pillar of Padma bridge after the driver lost control over the ferry on the way to Shimulia ghat in Munshiganj on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 9:45am when the ferry was coming to Shimulia ghat from Banglabazar in Madaripur.
Abdur Rahman, the ferry master, said he lost control following failure of technical system. Due to the strong current in the river, the ferry hit the pillar.
Meanwhile, ferry master Abdur Rahman has been suspended over the incident.
Besides, a four-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit report to BIWTC chairman within 3 working days.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) issued two orders on this regard on Friday, said senior Information officer Md Jahangir Alam Khan of Shipping Ministry.
"In-charge Inland Master Officer Abdur Rahman of the ferry, has been suspended as he failed to operate properly the 'Ferry Shahjalal' on Munshiganj's Shimulia-Madaripur's Banglabazar ferry route", said a notice.
