534 killed, 1169 injured in 504 road accidents in February

A report of the Road Traffic Monitoring Cell of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passenger welfare association made the disclosure today.

After analysing the news reports published in the country's newspapers, the organisation published its report at a press release on Monday morning.
Among the victims- 99 were drivers, 187 pedestrians, 62 women, 71 students, 45 transport workers, 54 children, 13 leaders of various political parties, two freedom fighters, 11 teachers and one engineer died in road accidents.
The percentage of the vehicles that caused the accidents are- 15.75 percent bus, 27.93 percent truck and covered van, 4.30 percent car-jeep-microbus, 8.17 percent CNG-operated auto-rickshaw, 20.95 percent motorbike, 10.54 percent battery operated rickshaw and easy bike and 12.33 percent human haulers and legunas.
In February, injuries from road accidents increased by 2.45 percent compared to January, while road accidents were down by 5.35 percent and death rate went down by 2.43 percent.
The highest number of road accidents took place on February 16. On this day, 25 road accidents killed 27 people and left 40 people injured. The least number of road accidents happened on February 27 when six accidents killed four people and left five people injured.
According to observation of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, the causes of road accidents include reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, vehicles without fitness, carelessness of passengers and pedestrians, unskilled drivers, use of mobile or headphones while crossing road, poor enforcement of traffic laws etc.
