Complaint against BU teacher, 5 students over attack on female pupil

A written complaint has been filed against six people, including a teacher and five students of Barishal University, over the March 1 attack on a female student of the university.

The accused are Sujit Kumar Bala, a lecturer in mathematics, and five students – Alim Salehin, Ariful Islam, Abdullah Firoz, Md Hafiz and Asaduzzaman Asad.

Abdul Mannan, father of victim Jannatul Nowrin Urmi, filed the complaint with Barishal Bandar Police Station on Monday evening. He is the president of BNP's ward-2 unit.

Urmi is a student of mathematics of 2015-16 academic year.

According to the complaint, the five students have been arranging different programmes for long by introducing themselves as Chhatra League leaders although there is no Chhatra League committee in the university.

Mannan said this evening that police had not turn the complaint into a lawsuit yet.

Deputy Police Commissioner (south) of Barishal Metropolitan Police Moktar Hasan said the process to turn the complaint into a lawsuit was underway.

There is a delay due to a problem in the server, he said.   

The victim's sister, Fatema Tuj Johora Mitu, and brother, Mehedi Hasan Sohel, are involved in BNP politics too.

Urmi is an activist of Chhatra Dal's Barishal University unit.

Proctor of the university Subrata Kumar Das said a three-member probe committee had been formed in this connection.

He said action would be taken after receiving the probe report.

According to the written complaint, Urmi on March 1 sat the vector calculus exam but Sujit Kumar Bala made her leave the exam hall after taking her answer script 45 minutes before the end of the test.

A group of 12-15 masked people stopped her when she was stepping down from the academic building. Then they took her in a quiet place on the fourth floor of the building and beat her with sticks and cricket stamps.

They also hit different parts of her body brutally with a geometry compass.

Mannan said his daughter received treatment at home for three days due to security issues.

She was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital on March 4 as her condition deteriorated.

The following night, she was taken to Dhaka for better treatment.

She is now admitted to a private clinic in Dhaka.

"Someone called Urmi from a Grameenphone number at around 1am on March 15, 2018. The caller threatened her, saying she would be raped and killed and her body would be dumped in the Kirtankhola river as she is a Chhatra Dal activist," Mitu said.  

She said a general diary was filed with Barishal Airport Police station in this connection.

"My sister was then threatened again and was asked to withdraw the general diary. Those who threatened my sister attacked her on March 1," she added.
