He was appointed for a one-year term during an executive committee meeting of the guild
Mozammel Babu, editor-in-chief of Ekattor TV, has been selected as the new president of the Editors Guild, Bangladesh – an association formed to protect editorial freedom and promote responsible journalism in the country.
He was appointed for a one-year term during an executive committee meeting of the guild on Monday at the office of bdnews24.com in the capital.
Mozammel succeeds the Guild's Founding President and bdnews24.com Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi, who had been serving in the role since January 4, 2019.
Khalidi proposed to dissolve the present committee, which had been serving in the capacity for more than a year, and it was unanimously passed by all members.
Gazi TV and Sarabangla.net Editor-in-Chief Syed Ishtiaque Reza proposed Mozammel's name for the presidency. The proposal received immediate support from the outgoing president.
In his immediate response, Mozammel Babu said he will work to strengthen the institute and to promote journalism.
"We will do all the possible work to promote responsible journalism, and to stop incidents like the one that happened with Bangla Tribune's reporter in Kurigram," he said.
Among others, DBC Television Editor-in-Chief Mohammed Manzurul Islam, Asian Age Editorial Board Chairman Shoeb Chowdhury, Maasranga TV Chief News Editor Rezwanul Haque Raza, Desh Television Editor Sukanta Gupta Alak, Bangla Tribune Editor Zulfiqer Russell, and ATN Bangla Chief Executive Editor ZI Mamun, also attended the meeting.
