The 2019/20 football season will have a conclusion

As the saying goes, it's not over till the fat lady sings.

And the 2019/20 European football season is far from over.

But that, as we all know, has hit a massive roadblock with the novel coronavirus pandemic taking over. 

The world has more or less been quarantined as Covid-19 has affected China - the originator - Italy and now the USA the most.

How the leagues stack up 

It has been a sigh of relief for many Manchester United and Everton fans as their arch-nemesis, Liverpool's title march has been halted; a couple more game weeks would have surely sealed their first league title in three decades. 

Whereas for Liverpool fans, a season that promised records galore and trophies, still leaves them waiting for that elusive Premier League title. 

They were looking forward to being unbeaten to a league title win while also winning the Uefa Champions League, but Watford and then Atletico Madrid completely rained on their parade. 

The top four race in the Premier League is still a heated battle with Leicester and newly-promoted Sheffield United looking to get in while the relegation battle is also an intriguing affair with big-spending West Ham also in it.

La Liga is also a tug of war between the two giants Real Madrid and Barcelona and both have been slipping and sliding all season, but Barcelona somehow find themselves atop of the table before the season came to a screeching halt.

Things in Italy have been very tight as Antonio Conte's Inter Milan and even Lazio, spurred on by Ciro Immobile's goals, find themselves in a title race with the defending champions Juventus.

In Germany, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund have also made a fist of it with defending champions Bayern Munich just slightly ahead. 

The scenario in France though is as expected, a one-horse race with Paris Saint-Germain running away with the league.

So what happens now?

All five of the top European leagues have been postponed indefinitely with the hope that they can be resumed in June at the latest.

There is an opportunity to finish the season even if it goes till late July as the Euros and the Copa America have been postponed till next year. 

The issue though will be with players and their contracts as many will be free agents after June and Fifa are said to be working a way out to extend their contracts till the end of the season. 

Worst case scenario is that football doesn't start in some leagues till July or even August, and even then the season can be extended and finished at a later date.

Why? The next Fifa World Cup scheduled to be held at Qatar in 2022, will be in December - January.

That would have meant a big break in the middle of the European football season to accommodate for the World Cup.

And if the season takes time to finish, say even October of this year, it will fall in line with how the next World Cup is planned. 

Yes, then the Euros and Copa might also have to be moved to that December - January period, but it seems like a more reasonable thing to do.

Having an international tournament like the World Cup mid-season would have been a massive distraction for the players and the clubs but this could now potentially be averted. 

There is also talks of the season being resumed in May and the matches finishing by the end of June, behind closed doors. 

With football being away from the people for so long, they will be watching in record numbers, and the TV broadcasters are almost sure to make more money than they would have if the season did not have an interruption. 

Yes, the clubs will be making a loss as far as ticket revenue is concerned, and may even have to pay back some of the money to the season ticket holders, but for football overall, it might not be as big a loss if the season was canceled. 

Whatever happens in the upcoming months, one thing looks more and more likely, the season will have a completion and it will not be null and void. 

The players have worked too hard and the fans have been invested for too long to have this season chalked off.

This season is not over yet, and the virus will be overcome.
