Lightning strike kills 3 in Cox’s Bazar
Initiatives are underway to send government assistance to the victims’ families
Three salt farmers were killed after being struck by lightning on Saturday during the season's first Nor'wester thunderstorm at Maheskhali upazila in Cox's Bazar.
The deceased were identified as Manik, 17, Mostafizur Rahman, 25, and Md Farukh, 25.
Maheshkhali upazila Nirbahi Officer Jamirul Islam confirmed the matter to The Business Standard, adding that initiatives are underway to send government assistance to the families of the victims.
The thunderstorm occurred in the afternoon, causing severe damage to houses and salt flats.
"All three of the farmers ran to the fields to collect the salt as soon as the thunderstorms started, which resulted in their demise," said Howanak Union Parishad Member Nurul Kabir.
He added that the strong gust and rain from the storm damaged the salt in the fields, washing most of it away.
