Rail link between Dhaka, other parts of country restored after 5 hours
Train communications between Dhaka and other parts of the country have been restored after five hours as quota protestors withdrawn the blockade at around 5pm.
"Students demanding quota reforms blocked the Mahakhali and Kawran Bazar rail crossings by placing logs around 11:30am. As a result, train movement on these routes has been stopped for more than five hours," Dhaka Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ferdous Ahmed Biswas told The Business Standard today (10 July) at the Kawran Bazar rail crossing area.
Kamalapur Station Master Anwar Hossain said, "All trains have been delayed due to the blockade. However, none of them has been cancelled or rescheduled. The trains will depart for their destinations as soon as the delay is over."
An agitating student, Sahab Ahmed, at the time, said, "The 'Bangla Blockade' programme will continue until our demands are met. The general public will have to accept this temporary inconvenience in the larger interest of the country.
"We have withdrawn the blockade from the railway crossing for now," he added.
Protesters gathered at the Shahbagh intersection and chanted various slogans against the quota system, bringing vehicular movement in the area to a halt from the morning.
