3 students detained from hostel, SUST teachers secure their bail
Teachers from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have secured the bail of three students who were detained from a boys' hostel on suspicion during a raid in Sylhet on Wednesday night (31 July).
"At night, we received information that the accused in a case filed over the assault and beating of policemen during the quota reform movement were staying in the hostel at Nihari Para near SUST," Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moin Uddin told The Business Standard today (1 August).
"When we reached the hostel, we found that one room was locked from inside with students. After an hour and a half, we took three suspicious individuals from the room.
"Later around 2:30pm today, when five teachers from SUST came, the students were released on bail."
Professor Ashraf Uddin of the Mathematics Department told TBS, "We received news at 11am today that the students had been detained on suspicion. They were going through the legal process.
"Later, after a two-hour-long discussion with the OC, he agreed to release the students. The students are now safe."
The detained individuals were identified as Monir Hossain, a former student of the Department of Public Administration at SUST, Md Sohag, a student of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at SUST (2017-18 session) and Md Anas Mia, a student of the Zoology Department at Murari Chand (MC) College, Sylhet.
