Ex-justice Manik hospitalised after attack at court
He has been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital
Former Supreme Court justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik has been hospitalised after coming under attack at court premises in Sylhet.
He was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital yesterday (24 August) night, Sylhet Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Md Sagir Mia told The Business Standard.
Some people physically assaulted Manik when he was being taken to the court yesterday following his detention from the border areas.
According to eyewitnesses, pro-BNP lawyers and a group of people on the court premises indiscriminately punched Manik. Some hurled eggs and shoes at him.
"His [Manik] condition is critical. The beating caused internal bleeding in his body. A testicle ruptured. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital," Sagir Mia said.
"He was sick during the border detention. He should have been treated before taking him to court," he added.
After a hearing, Sylhet's Judicial Magistrate-1 Judge Alamgir Hossain ordered police to send the former justice to jail.
Police produced him in court after showing him arrested in section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), said court inspector Jamshed Alam.
The former justice was detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while he was allegedly trying to cross over to India from the Jakiganj border area in Sylhet on the night of 23 August.
He was later handed over to Kanaighat Police Station on Saturday morning.
According to police, a case has been filed against Manik in Dhaka.
Manik was a justice of the Appellate Division. He retired in September 2015. Later, he became a known figure to attend various Television programmes and talk shows.
