Barishal University gets first female VC
Sharmin’s tenure as VC will be four years from the date of joining. She will get pay and allowances equivalent to her present post. She will enjoy other benefits pertaining to the post as per the rules
Shuchita Sharmin, a professor at Dhaka University's Development Studies Department, has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Barishal University.
She has been appointed as the fifth VC of the university, also becoming the first woman to hold the post.
The appointment letter was issued today (23 September). Monirul Islam, the university registrar, confirmed the information.
According to the terms of appointment, Sharmin's tenure as VC will be four years from the date of joining. She will get pay and allowances equivalent to her present post. She will enjoy other benefits pertaining to the post as per the rules.
Suchita Sharmin completed her BSc and MSc in psychology from Dhaka University and started her career as a lecturer in 2003.
She is doing her PhD in Development Studies.
As a Doctoral Research Scholar, she participated in research on Corporate Community Involvement and Disaster Risk Reduction conducted jointly by Switzerland and India.
Sharmin was a research scholar at Kyushu University in Japan, where she completed an intensive Japanese language course.
She has been invited to lecture and research on various topics at her undergraduate and postgraduate universities in Bangladesh, Japan, Switzerland, UK, Nepal, Malaysia and India.
She has published more than 45 articles in international journals and three books.
In the face of the students' ultimatum on August 20, the fourth VC of Barishal University, Mohammad Badruzzaman Bhuiyan resigned.
