Rs1 crore spent to make film Mughal-e-Azam's song 'Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya' 64 years ago
Many industry experts believe that when adjusted for inflation, Mughal-e-Azam remains the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time
The blockbuster Indian film Mughal-e-Azam's song "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya" took Rs1 crore to make 64 years ago, reports DNA India.
But there's more.
The song wasn't written at one go either.
Voiced by the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, it was written around 105 times.
Filmed at Mohan Studios, the song was shot on an elaborate set that replicated the Sheesh Mahal of Lahore Fort.
The set's construction alone cost over Rs1 crore, a staggering amount at the time, surpassing the budget of most Hindi films.
The set was massive, measuring 150 feet in length, 80 feet in breadth, and 35 feet in height, and took two years to complete, as per DNA's report.
Music director Naushad and lyricist Shakeel Badayuni were highly meticulous in crafting the song.
It took Badayuni 105 revisions of the lyrics before Naushad approved the final version.
Moreover, in an era where modern sound effects like echo weren't readily available, Naushad had Lata Mangeshkar sing the song in a studio bathroom to achieve the desired echo effect.
The extensive efforts put into the song, and the film as a whole, paid off as Mughal-e-Azam became a blockbuster.
Many industry experts believe that when adjusted for inflation, Mughal-e-Azam remains the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.
The song Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya continues to be celebrated as one of Bollywood's greatest musical masterpieces.
