Shakti Foundation signs MoU with RAJUK for citywide tree plantation initiative
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and Shakti Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a greening programme throughout Dhaka City, a significant initiative aimed at addressing climate change and the city's rising air pollution.
Bangladesh has been experiencing prolonged and intense heatwaves due to excessive deforestation and increasing urbanisation, and such collaboration is essential to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and restore green spaces in the capital.
The MoU signing ceremony was held at RAJUK's office on 8 October 2024. In the presence of senior officials from both institutions, RAJUK Chairman Major General (Retd.) Siddiqur Rahman and Shakti Foundation's Senior Director and Head of Administration, Md. Shariful Islam, signed the MoU.
Mr. Imran Ahmed, Deputy Executive Director of Shakti Foundation, discussed the partnership by stating, "The detrimental consequences of deforestation have been obvious in recent years, including an increase in temperature and deteriorating air quality. This partnership between Shakti Foundation and RAJUK, which involves the planting and maintenance of trees in strategic locations in Dhaka, reiterates Shakti's commitment to the residents of our beloved capital by continuing to increase greener spaces and improve air quality."
According to research, every country should have at least 25% forest area to maintain ecological equilibrium. Regrettably, Dhaka, like many other urban areas, has failed to achieve this objective, exacerbating the adverse effects of global warming and the heat island effect. We believe that this partnership will be instrumental in transforming Dhaka into a more liveable city and aiding in the fight against environmental challenges.
