He was the first central bank official to die from coronavirus
A Bangladesh Bank official died from Covid-19 at Holy Family Hospital in the capital on Monday.
The deceased – Sheikh Farid Uddin Sowad, 36, – worked as a joint director at the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy in Mirpur.
"We have sent an official to the hospital to know whether Farid Uddin's death was from coronavirus or other diseases. But we have not got confirmation yet," Md Serajul Islam, executive director and spokesperson of the central bank, told The Business Standard.
According to the death certificate issued by the coronavirus-dedicated hospital, Farid Uddin died from Covid-19.
Farid was suffering from other diseases for a long time, said Bangladesh Bank insiders.
Farid Uddin, a native of Kushtia, joined the central bank as an assistant director in 2010. He is survived by his wife and a four-year-old kid.
He was the first central bank official to die from coronavirus. Till now, at least 20 officials of commercial banks have died from Covid-19.
