JU women's hall provost Mursheda resigns amid protest
Professor Mursheda Begum, the provost of Jahangirnagar University's (JU) Jahanara Imam Hall, resigned yesterday (19 October) amid student protests.
She submitted her resignation via email around 11:30pm.
At 11pm, students protested in front of the hall gate, demanding her resignation and 22 other demands.
One of the main allegations that led to the students demanding Mursheda's resignation was that she did not ensure the safety of the women students by coming to the hall when they were attacked on 15 July.
The students also alleged that the hall superintendent, on 17 July, locked the collapsible gate of the hall on Mursheda's order, preventing the women students of Jahanara Imam Hall from joining the movement.
Mursheda Begum allegedly said, "If any girl participates in the movement and gets injured, I will not take responsibility."
Additionally, there were also allegations of financial mismanagement during her tenure.
Last year, despite a budget of Tk1.8 crore for hall renovations, only Tk99 lakhs worth of work was reportedly completed, with no clear account of the remaining funds.
JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said, "Action will be taken against her within 15 days of receiving the students' written complaints. The allegations against both hall superintendents will be thoroughly investigated, and justice will be ensured."
