Bicycle sharing service Jobike hits Dhaka streets
Anyone can avail the service through the Jobike app, and the rent is Tk1 per minute.
The on-demand bicycle sharing service Jobike has finally hit the streets of Dhaka.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam inaugurated the service at Gulshan on Wednesday morning.
As part of a pilot programme, there are some 100 bicycles parked in 22 points in four areas of the capital. The areas are Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan.
To avail the service, the customer would first to need download the mobile application, then open an account and launch the app. There they can find out where to get bicycles. The rent would be Tk1 per minute.
The DNCC took the initiative to help people maintain social distancing in the capital. The riders can have a solo bicycle ride during this coronavirus outbreak.
Riding bicycles will also contribute to reducing pollution.
Launching the service, Mayor Atiqul Islam said, "We all have grown up hearing that bicycle is for the poor. But currently all over the world both the rich and the poor use bicycles as a transport."
He urged people to use bicycles to contribute to a pollution-free Dhaka city for the future generation.
The mayor also said, "Today, it's an experimental launch. In future, we want to expand the service to Uttara and then to every area of the DNCC."
Stressing the increased use of bicycle to save Dhaka, he said, "We are working to make a separate lane in roads for pedestrian and bicycle."
