CMCH doctor death: Appeal against wife Mitu’s bail

The state filed an appeal on Monday in the Appealate Division asking for postponement of the High Court rule granting bail to Tanjila Haque Mitu in a case over instigating her husband Mustafa Murshed Akash to commit suicide. 

Mustafa Murshed Akash, 32, a doctor of the medicine department at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), reportedly committed suicide at his home in the Chandgaon Residential Area in the port city on January 31.

The hearing over the appeal petition will be held on October 9, said Deputy Attorney General Gias Uddin Ahmed, after the appeal was filed on behalf of the state. 

Earlier on August 28, The High Court granted bail to Mitu after a bail petition was placed by her lawyer A M Amin, president of the Supreme Court Lawyers’ Association. 

Mustafa Murshed Akash was taken to CMCH in critical condition by his brother in the morning on February 1. The on-duty doctor declared him dead, said Assistant Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of CMCH Police Outpost. 

The following day, Mustafa Murshed Akash’s mother Jobeda Khanom filed a case at Chandgaon Police Station under section 306, accusing Mitu and six others, along with four unidentified people, of instigating the suicide. 

The accused are -- Tanjila Haque Mitu, 29, her mother Shamim Shelli, 49, father Anisul Haque Chowdhury, 55, sister Shanjila Haque Chowdhury Alisha, 21, and two friends – Uttam Patel and Dr Mahbubul Alam. 

The Counter Terrorism Unit of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrested Mitu from her relative's house in the Nandankanan area on the night of January 31.  Police seized her mobile phone based on what they said was her confession. 

Mustafa Murshed Akash and Mitu met in 2009 and got married in 2016.
