9 Baira executives resign, call for election
They announced their resignation at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity today (27 October), citing a need for transparent elections within the organisation.
Nine executive committee members of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA), including the acting president, vice-president, and joint secretary, have resigned.
At a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital today (27 October), the resigning members cited the need for transparent elections within the organisation. Led by Senior Vice-President Riazul Islam and Vice-President Noman Chowdhury, they submitted their resignations on 24 October, seeking "an environment conducive to a proper election" through the appointment of an administrator.
The resigning members accused BAIRA President Abul Bashar and the current committee of "unlawful practices" and obstructing democratic processes within the organisation.
"To respect the aspirations of our members, it is essential to have a fair, credible, and acceptable election. We urge an administrator to be appointed to facilitate this," said Fakhrul Islam, the former joint secretary.
Fakhrul also alleged that under the current president's leadership, several committee members had close ties to the recently ousted Awami League government and were attempting to "unlawfully cling to power".
The outgoing leaders argued that the current committee's term expired on 7 September, but its tenure was extended twice without a new election.
They insisted that appointing an administrator is the only path to a credible election.
BAIRA President Abul Bashar reportedly left the country for Singapore during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and did not return following the change of government.
