‘Ghost of Tsushima’ movie in development with ‘John Wick’s Chad Stahelski directing
The first three ‘John Wick’ films were directed by Stahelski, with a fourth film in the works
According to the reports of Deadline, Sony and Sucker Punch's PlayStation 4 hit Ghost of Tsushima is being adapted into a film with John Wick director Chad Stahelski at the helm. Shortly after, Sony announced the film's production news in a blog.
The first three 'John Wick' films were directed by Stahelski, with a fourth film in the works. The famous action franchise starring Keanu Reeves has grossed over $600 million worldwide.
The game, which stars samurai warrior Jin Sakai as he battles a massive Mongol army to defend the island of Tsushima, is heavily inspired by classic samurai films like those from Akira Kurosawa, and thus appears to be a perfect match for the big screen.
On July 17, 2020, the game was released for the PlayStation 4 and became an instant success, selling over 6.5 million copies. At last year's Game Awards 'Ghost of Tsushima' won nominations for game of the year, best game direction, best narrative, and best performer for Daisuke Tsuji, who played Jin Sakai. Within three days of its release, the game had sold over 2.4 million copies around the world.
The film adaptation will be produced by Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz through their company 87Eleven Entertainment. PlayStation Productions will be led by Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Executive producers will be Sucker Punch Productions, with Peter Kang in charge of the project.
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are currently working on two more video game film adaptations. The movie 'Uncharted,' starring Tom Holland, will be released on February 11, 2022, and HBO's 'The Last of Us,' starring Pedro Pascal, is currently in production with Craig Mazin, the creator of 'Chernobyl.'
