Legally Blonde is getting a mobile game
Legally Blonde 3 is currently in production at MGM, scheduled to hit theaters in May 2022
Film studio Metro Goldwin Meyer and mobile game developer PlaySide Studios will partner to bring a feature film series to the tiny screen. The Australian game studio will be developing a new mobile puzzle game based on MGM's Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red White & Blonde.
If you never saw the film, or your memory's a bit fuzzy, Legally Blonde is a 2001 comedy based on a novel of the same name. The film stars Reese Witherspoon as blonde valley girl Elle Woods. After getting dumped, she attends Harvard Law to prove she's just as smart as her ex-boyfriend and overcomes the stereotype of the ditzy blonde. The film was a breakout hit and remains popular even 20 years later. The later films weren't quite as successful, but the original remains influential.
According to the official press release, the new game will be a mobile puzzler with a choice-based narrative. The studios promise a highly immersive mobile game that preserves the messages and themes of the films. The game will also feature alternate paths and allow players to create their own stories.
Legally Blonde 3 is currently in production at MGM, scheduled to hit theaters in May 2022 and may explain the new mobile project's timing. This year also marks the first film's 20th anniversary. MGM couldn't have picked a better time to pull its popular IP into the world of gaming. That may also be why the game will be free-to-play on iOS and android. MGM likely hopes it will help build interest for the upcoming film.
The Port Melbourne-based PlaySide Studios is a natural choice for the film's mobile adaptation. They have plenty of experience with film and TV tie-ins. The studio released games based on everything from SpongeBob SquarePants, Jumanji, TMNT to Batman v. Superman. Their most famous game is the VR zombie survival game The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. They have also developed several first-party mobile and PC games, such as the Archangel series of VR mech combat games.
PlaySide and MGM haven't set a release date, but we can likely expect to see the Legally Blonde mobile game sometime before the planned 2022 release of Legally Blonde 3.
