Bangladesh women secure back-to-back victories, climbing 21 spots at Chess Olympiad
Starting the seventh round in 61st place, Bangladesh are now positioned 40th in the women’s section with a total of nine points.
The Bangladesh women's chess team defeated the Dominican Republic 2.5-1.5 in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, on Wednesday, climbing 21 places in the standings.
This victory marks their second consecutive win, following a triumph over Uruguay in the sixth round.
In the match, WFM Noshin Anjum drew against WFM Castillo Pena Patricia Evarista, while WCM Walijah Ahmed lost to WFM Diaz Cesar Wilsaida Pieranlly. However, WFM Wadifa Ahmed secured a victory over Gonzalez Peguero Mary Loly, and veteran WIM Rani Hamid won against WCM Ramirez Luzon Franchesca to seal the team's fourth win in seven matches.
Bangladesh women will next face Sweden, who are ranked 35th, in the eighth round today.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh men's team had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Slovakia despite holding a 1.5-0 lead earlier in the match.
Fahad Rahman defeated GM Gazik Viktor, and GM Niaz Murshed drew with IM Druska Juraj to give Bangladesh the advantage. However, GM Enamul Hossain Razib lost to IM Sahidi Samir, while FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia played to a draw against IM Kostolansky Sebastian Lukas, resulting in Bangladesh's second draw after seven rounds.
The men's team moved up one spot, now sitting 73rd with eight points. They are set to play against 46th-placed Kazakhstan in today's match.
