Bangladesh's greatest away Test wins
Bangladesh's win against West Indies is certainly one of their best in away Tests. But where does it belong among the other away Test wins of Bangladesh?
Bangladesh have secured several historic Test victories away from home. Below is a list of top five wins of the Tigers abroad:
1. Bangladesh vs. New Zealand (Mount Munganui, January 2022- 1st Test)
Result: Bangladesh won by 8 wickets. Breaking New Zealand's 17-match unbeaten home streak was historic and came against a full-strength side in alien conditions.
Bangladesh produced a landmark performance to secure their greatest away Test victory. New Zealand posted 328 in their first innings, with Devon Conway scoring a brilliant 122. Bangladesh responded with an impressive 458, led by a fine 78 run knock from Mahmudul Hasan Joy and 86 of Litton Das.
The star of the match, Ebadot Hossain, bowled with fiery pace and precision in New Zealand's second innings, taking 6/46 to bowl the hosts out for just 169. Chasing a mere 40, Bangladesh cruised home with ease, securing an emphatic win.
2. Bangladesh vs. West Indies (Kingston, December 2024- 2nd Test)
Result: Bangladesh won by 101 runs. A thrilling contest capped by a brilliant bowling performance.
Bangladesh overcame a first-innings collapse to claim a dramatic win at Sabina Park. Batting first, they managed just 164. However, the bowlers, led by Nahid Rana (5/61), restricted the hosts to 146, giving Bangladesh a 18 runs lead.
In the second innings, Bangladesh posted 268, thanks to Jaker Ali's resilient 91. Chasing 287, West Indies crumbled under pressure, with Taijul Islam taking 5/50 to seal a memorable victory.
3. Bangladesh vs. Pakistan (Rawalpindi, September 2024 – 2nd Test)
Result: Bangladesh won by 6 wickets. Secured their first Test series victory over Pakistan, cementing their dominance. Facing Pakistan on their home soil, Bangladesh pulled off an incredible win to seal the series. After Pakistan posted 274, Bangladesh were in dire straits at 26/6 in their first innings. Litton Das played one of the greatest counterattacking innings, scoring 138, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributing 78, lifting the total to 262.
In Pakistan's second innings, they collapsed to 172 all out, with Hasan Mahmud taking a fifer. Bangladesh then chased down the target of 185 with relative ease, finishing at 185/4.
4. Bangladesh vs. Pakistan (Rawalpindi, August 2024 – 1st Test)
Result: Bangladesh won by 10 wickets. Bangladesh made history by securing their first-ever Test victory over Pakistan in the first Test of the series at Rawalpindi. This was a landmark win for Bangladesh, who had previously faced Pakistan 14 times in Test cricket without a victory, with only one draw and 12 losses. The win, which came by 10 wickets, was their first 10-wicket victory in Test cricket.
Pakistan posted a formidable total of 448 in the first innings. Mohammad Rizwan played a crucial role, scoring an unbeaten 171, while Saud Shakeel also contributed with a century.
Bangladesh's batting was led by Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored a brilliant 191 runs. Shadman Islam supported him with 93 runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 77. Bangladesh's total of 565 runs put them 117 ahead of Pakistan.
In the second innings, Pakistan's innings collapsed as Miraz picked up four wickets. Chasing a target of just 30 runs to win, Bangladesh wrapped up the match in just 7 overs without losing a wicket.
5. Bangladesh vs. West Indies (St. Vincent, July 2009- 1st Test)
Result: Bangladesh won by 95 runs. Their first-ever away Test win. Bangladesh created history by defeating West Indies in St. Vincent. Batting first, they scored 238. West Indies took a slender lead by scoring 307 but were undone in the second innings by a brilliant knock from Tamim Iqbal.
The Bangladesh opener played a 128 runs innings which enabled the away team to set a target of 277. Bangladesh bowled West Indies out for 181, winning the game by 95 runs and made history.
