DPL to begin on May 6 in T20 format
The teams have to play the tournament with a similar squad as the unfinished tournament last year.
Dhaka Premier League (DPL), the premier 50-over tournament in Bangladesh, is the lone source of income for many cricketers. That's why a lot of them wanted the tournament to be held even during the Covid-19. Much to their delight, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that the tournament will begin on May 6.
This year, there will be a change in the format of the tournament as it will be in T20 format. That the DPL will be a T20 tournament this year has been confirmed by Quazi Inam Ahmed, the chairman of the Cricket Committee of Metropolis (CCDM). The decision was taken after a meeting that involved the Premier League clubs.
"We had a meeting at CCDM today. Representatives from 12 clubs of the DPL took part in the meeting. Since there's a lot of international cricket, it's difficult to find a window for DPL. Last year we couldn't continue the tournament. This year the tournament will begin on May 6."
"We don't have much time. We have got 15 days in two windows and we can add maybe a couple of days. With this, we have to start the tournament. We have had a discussion with the club representatives and decided to arrange a T20 tournament," Inam Ahmed added.
The teams have to play the tournament with a similar squad as the unfinished tournament last year. "This tournament will be the continuation of the tournament that held last year. But we will abandon the solitary round that was played last year. Players will play for the same team as the previous edition. Most of the clubs have already completed 30-40% of the payments. That's why we have decided that teams will participate in the tournament with the same squad," said Inam Ahmed.
Inam Ahmed informed that the 12-team tournament will include a super league and there will be relegations and promotions.
"We will host the tournament in two windows. The dates will be finalised later. The matches will be held in Mirpur and on two grounds at BKSP. Two matches will be held at a ground on the same day and the teams will have matches every day," he concluded.
