3 fined for catching dolphin with fishing rods

A mobile court fined three people Tk30,000 at Ghior upazila in Manikganj for catching dolphins with fishing rods.
The accused have been identified as Anwar Hossain, Mohammad Jalal Uddin and Mohammad Alam, all of them hailed from Meghshimul village under Jagir union at Sadar upazila in Manikganj.
A mobile court led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Irene Akhter fined each of the accused Tk10,000 on Saturday evening.
Officer-in-charge of Ghior Police Station Mohammad Riaz Uddin Ahmed said the trio caught a 20-kg dolphin from Jamuna river at Jeonpur village under Daulatpur upazila of the district on Friday night.
He said on Saturday morning, the amateur fishermen were at Ghior bus stand area. On information, police detained them from the spot along with the dolphin. Later, they were later sent to a mobile court.
UNO and judge of the mobile court Irene Akhter said they were fined Tk 30,000 under Section 12 of Wildlife Conservation Act for failing to release the dolphin after catching it with a fishing rod.
Later in the afternoon, the dolphin was released into the Padma River at Ferry Ghat-4 at Paturia under Shibalay upazila, she added.
