AL ex-lawmaker Solaiman Selim sent to jail in murder case

A Dhaka court today (14 November) sent former Awami League lawmaker from Dhaka-7 constituency and son of Haji Mohammad Selim, Mohammad Solaiman Selim to jail in a case filed over the murder of Rakib Hawlader during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 5 August.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zunaid passed the order as police produced him before the court.
The court said the hearing on his bail plea and police's petition to place him on remand will be held after the main case documents reach the court.
Earlier today, a team of Chawkbazar Police arrested Salim from Gulshan area around 1:30am, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Hossain told BSS.
According to police, Rakib got shot as the Awami League and its front and associate bodies fired live rounds and hurled crude bombs at the protesters during the student-people movement at Chankharpool crossing on the morning of 5 August. The Awami League goons even stopped the people from rescuing Rakib and taking him to the nearest hospital.
He was later rushed to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Haji Mohammad Salim, former lawmaker of Awami League (Dhaka-7), from the Bangshal area of Dhaka on 1 September last.
