Animal wastes to be removed within 24 hours: Dhaka city mayors

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam said the wastes of the sacrificial animals will be removed from the city within the next 24 hours.

While speaking to reporters after Eid-ul-Adha prayer at Baitul Mukarram on Saturday, DSCC Mayor Taposh made remark.

"I have taken up a special programme from 2pm. All the wastes of the city will be removed starting then. The leave of all the officers and employees of the city corporation has been cancelled. Also, the removal of waste from the cattle markets has started since last midnight," he said.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam said the sacrificial animal waste would be removed within the next 24 hours.  He said this while inaugurating the removal of sacrificial animal waste at Bhatara Saeed Nagar at 2.15 pm on Saturday.

"Many people do not keep waste in specific places. This sacrifice is for three days. All the animal sacrifices that will be made today, we must remove the waste within 24 hours. Again, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, many will slaughter their sacrificial animal. But it will not take 24 hours, it will be removed before that," the DNCC mayor added.

Addressing the journalists, he said: "If you highlight the waste management situation in different areas, then it will be helpful for us."

"I would kindly request the city dwellers, those of you who are slaughtering animals - put the sacrificial animal waste in a specific bag, the cleaning staff of DNCC will collect it. If we behave like good citizens, then the city will be clean," Atiqul said.

"At one hand there is coronavirus, on the other hand the dengue challenge. We will start spraying bleaching powder and liquid disinfectant through 11 water bowsers. We created an app and posted it on the DNCC website and Facebook page. If you download it, open it and submit the picture of the waste, we will know immediately where the waste is and we will take action accordingly. In addition, our control room is open 24 hours," he added.

"The leave of all the officers and employees of the city corporation has already been canceled. Councilors are also on the field. We live in this city, we have children, we have relatives, we want to keep this city beautiful. I request the city dwellers to cooperate with us."

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Abdul Hai, Secretary Rabindra Shri Barua, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore M Saidur Rahman among others were present during the inauguration of the waste disposal.
