Fakhrul calls Bangabazar fire 'mysterious'
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the fire incident in Bangabazar market that gutted thousands of shops on Tuesday is "mysterious".
In a statement, Mirza Fakhrul said incidents of this nature are happening repeatedly due to the current government's apathy, indifference and lack of accountability.
"No action was taken to investigate past incidents of this kind, so the government is now unable to prevent similar ones from occurring repeatedly," the BNP secretary general said.
He expressed concern over the extreme uncertainty that looms over small business owners and shop employees of the burnt-down market ahead of Eid.
He urged the government to take appropriate measures to compensate those affected and demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in a statement expressed deep grief over the incident.
Prof Mujibur Rahman, acting amir of the party called on the concerned authorities to provide appropriate compensation to the victims and form a probe committee to investigate the cause of this accident.
Moreover, Member Secretary to the Bangladesh Gono Adhikar Parishad Nurul Haque Nur, Gono Songhoti Andolon's Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki, and Bangladesh Labor Party Chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran demanded financial assistance to the victims and an investigation into the accident.
