Bangladeshi teen shot dead allegedly by Indian 'Khasia' along Sylhet border

A Bangladeshi teenager was shot dead allegedly by "Khasia" people of India's Meghalaya near the Jaintapur border in Sylhet today (26 December).
The deceased identified as Md Maruf Mia, 16, was the son of Md Shahabuddin from Jhingabari village in Jaintapur upazila.
"The incident occurred today on the Indian side of the border," Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman, commander of the 48th Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Sylhet, said in a press release.
"Around 12:30pm, Maruf Mia and several others entered a betel nut orchard inside Indian territory, near border pillar 1282/7-S. A conflict arose between them and some Khasia people. At one point, a Khasia individual shot Maruf," he added.
The officer further stated Maruf's companions brought him back to Bangladesh. Later, his family took him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries around 3pm.
The BGB lodged a formal protest with the Border Security Force following the incident.
According to BGB, a company commander-level flag meeting was held at 4:30pm, during which the BGB submitted a protest note and demanded that the accused Indian citizen be brought to book swiftly, the release added.
