Ex-Dhaka North mayor Atiqul sent to jail in murder case

A Dhaka court today (7 February) sent the former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam to jail in a case filed with the Uttara East Police Station over the killing of Md Fazlul Karim on 5 August.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Tithi passed the order as police produced Atiqul before the court after the end of his three-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of probe.
A court on 22 January remanded him in the case.
According to the case documents, Md Fazlul Karim joined the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Uttara Jasim Uddin intersection on 5 August. He got shot by assailants around 4:30pm and was rushed to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 9:20pm.
Karim's brother Anwar Hosssain Ainal filed the case on 21 August against 39, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Police arrested the former DNCC mayor from the capital's Mohakhali DOHS on 16 October. He was placed on different terms of remand in cases filed over crimes committed during July Uprising.
