Khaled trying to control underworld from jail
Khaled’s 15 accomplices are in possession of more than a hundred firearms, including four AK-22s
It has been two months since expelled Jubo League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan landed in jail during the crackdown on casinos.
He initially thought he would get bail and come back to his underworld.
But, realising that that is not going to happen, he is now planning to continue running his illegal drug and arms business from jail through his gang, said a source who is close to him.
Khaled has directed his accomplices to keep in contact with Manik, a fugitive high profile criminal, to maintain supremacy in the capital's Rampura, Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Basabo, Motijheel and Ramna areas.
The source also said that Khaled has also directed them to take care of his stock of firearms.
Khaled's 15 accomplices are in possession of more than a hundred firearms, including four AK-22s.
Most of the firearms were procured from former Jubo League leader Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar, who is a listed criminal in Chattogram.
Babar has been charged in 16 cases, including a double murder case, in the port city. The firearms were sent to Dhaka from Chattogram by train.
Khaled also got firearms from a gun shop in the capital's Paltan area that belongs to Babar's friend.
The firearms were kept in two houses in the capital – one at Chamelibagh in Shantinagar and another in Kamalapur.
The owner of the Chamelibagh house is a union parishad chairman of Brahmanbaria, while a physician owns the house in Kamalapur.
Both of them are close friends of Khaled.
Several sources in law enforcing agencies said this information surfaced during investigating of cases filed aginst Khaled under the Firearms Act and the Narcoticas Act, as well as in the statements of several of Khaled's accomplices.
However, none of the 15 accomplices who have the firearms, have been arrested as yet.
Khaled's stock of firearms is still at large.
Khaled's accomplices
Khaled's main accomplices are Belal Hossen Kislu and Rois Uddin. They have been charged in the Mithun and Titu murder case.
Both murders took place in the Cristal Cable Network office in the capital's Banasree area in 2005. Two other men, Roni and Sajib, were also hired for the killing.
Rois, Rony, Sajib, and one of Khaled's aides named Fakhrul, were also involved in the Mahbubur Rahman Rana killing over controlling the cable TV business in Maghbazar in 2014.
Roni, Sajib, Fakhrul and three 'hired killers' named Shahadat Hossen Sadhu, Rasel and Sohag joined Khaled's group.
After Khaled became the organising secretary of Jubo League's Dhaka South unit in 2012, all of them established a reign of terror in the areas.
Khaled gave backup to Kailla Aminul, Onkur and Ujjal Morshed, who were accused in the Jubo League leader Riazul Haque Khan Milki murder case. Khaled's firearms are also in their safekeeping.
Kabir and Parvez were also part of Khaled's criminal gang. These two were accused in the Dr Nitai murder case. Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad leader Dr Nitai was killed in 2010.
There are at least 15 cases, including those for murder, mugging, robbery and extortion, in the capital against Kabir.
Palti Ripon, another of Khaled's accomplices, was accused in the Swechha Sebok League leader Kauser murder case filed in 2007.
Selim, another of Khaled's aides, was accused in the Awami League leader Siddique murder case.
After investigating the case filed against Khaled under the Firearms Act, the Rapid Action Battalion-3 said Khaled built a large criminal gang when he became the organising secretary of the youth front.
He ran his illegal businesses with the help of this gang in the capital's Motijheel, Arambagh, Fakirapool, Shahjahanpur, Mugda, Kamalapur, Rampura, Sabujbagh and adjacent areas.
Shofiullah Bulbul, captain of RAB-3, said law enforcers are investigating the allegations against Khaled. The charge sheet in the arms case had already been submitted, he said.
Shofiullah added that detectives are trying to apprehend Khaled's accomplices.
How firearms, yaba used to reach Dhaka
Khaled established control over Railway Bhaban in the capital after he was made the organising secretary. His two brothers controlled the tender business there. They took a four percent cut in every tender deal of the Bangladesh Railway.
The syndicate also manipulated the tender process of the Railway so that they got the contract for catering and cleaning services. People close to him worked in the catering and cleaning services on the trains. Khaled transported arms and yaba tablets from Chattogram to Dhaka with their help. Kislu received the arms while Sohag received the yaba.
How is Khaled communicating with his accomplices?
Khaled used to give instructions to his accomplices through his relatives or aides who visited him in Keraniganj Central Jail, according to the source.
However, a prison guard in Keraniganj Central Jail said that Khaled has been shifted to Kashimpur jail in Gazipur.
